It was heart breaking. I was crossing a pedestrian overpass in the heart of Delhi when I stumbled on an 18 month girl sitting naked on the pathway. She was begging with her mother at her side. The temperature was incredibly hot at 47 degrees Celsius and even hotter sitting on the concrete.
There in the stifling heat sat the little girl with one hand stretched out and another eating a Pizza Hut slice, likely given to her by a sympathetic tourist. Three thoughts struck me when I saw her. First she resembled my daughter. They were of similar age, both having large round eyes and pixie mops that girls of those years typically wear. Second, fast food packed
with sodium can’t possibly be healthy, especially when one is nutritionally deprived. Finally, how is it that some have way too much and others not enough? What sets the path for my little girl or the one begging under the hot Delhi sun? Is it karma, luck or maybe the grace of God.
